While Europe writes AI policy frameworks, Chinese eight-year-olds are building algorithms.
A country of 1.4 billion people just made AI mandatory from age eight.
And I canβt stop thinking about what they understood that we didnβt.
China has integrated AI into its primary and secondary curriculum as a state mandate. Third-graders learn the basics, fourth-graders work with data and coding, and by fifth grade, children are studying intelligent agents and algorithms. At university level, AI is becoming part of the basic curriculum for all students, paired with interdisciplinary courses across fields. Meanwhile, companies like Baidu, Alibaba and Huawei are plugging directly into universities with cloud labs and real-world cases.
What strikes me is not the speed. Itβs the breadth.
This isnβt an AI elective bolted onto an existing system. This is a country rethinking what education means when the ground beneath knowledge work is shifting. The aim is to cultivate not just technical skills but critical thinking, human-AI collaboration, and a strong sense of social responsibility.
And thatβs where my wonderment begins. Because a curriculum is shaped by a mindset. And this mindset says: AI is not a subject. Itβs a lens through which every subject must be reconsidered.
In Europe, weβre still asking whether AI belongs in the classroom. China is asking what the classroom becomes when AI is already everywhere else.
I donβt say this to glorify any system. I say this because urgency without depth is panic, and depth without urgency is irrelevance. What I see in Chinaβs approach is both: the urgency to act and the willingness to rethink the framework underneath.
The question is not whether we should follow. The question is whether weβre willing to think as broadly as the challenge demands.
